I have been a private teacher for over 16 years, teaching both from home and as a music teacher within a school. I have guided pupils through practical piano exams from preparatory level to grade 7 with ABRSM , Trinity Guildhall and more recently MTB , and theory up to and including grade 5 ABRSM.
When covid entered the world in early 2020 I was teaching approximately thirty students solely face to face. A combination of children as young as 7 up to retired adults in their 70s were all discovering a love of music in my presence with my guidance. I loved my working life. Then lockdown. As a technophobe who loved my job I was distraught to say the least. But we had to find a way to continue and my online lessons were born.
The results were amazing. For around a year I only saw students online. In this time a good number successfully completed the grades they were working towards , which ranged from grade 1 to grade 6 , using remote exams with ABRSM. Everyone embraced the new situation . I’d go as far as to say we enjoyed it. In fact many have chosen to continue to have their lessons with me online despite the relaxation of rules meaning I have been offering face to face lessons again since March 2021!
I currently favour the MTB ( Music Teachers Board) performance grades and I actually prefer it to the old style of face to face exams. The pre-recorded aspect alleviates a lot of nerves and I think music is supposed to provide joy, not anxiety, so I am a fan. The MTB system is very user friendly and stress free. Also the very wide and free choice of repertoire on their syllabus enables the budding musician to play what they love, which is to me the whole point of music. I do not believe exams are essential for progress, but for many people they provide a structure vital for improvement. However that is very much up to the individual.
